Traditionally, Alaska Gear Company produced steel struts, a popular choice for their strength. However, steel was susceptible to corrosion, as moisture infiltration could cause internal rust and compromise structural integrity. To address Airworthiness Directive 99-01-05, we developed sealed steel struts. While effective, these designs exhibited increased complexity and weight.
We began manufacturing Aluminum Lift struts first for the PA-18 and have since added Aluminum Struts for Maule's, Huskies, and more Piper models. In 2023 we ceased production of the sealed steel struts due to a combination of factors and our desire to put full focus behind the innovation of aluminum.
Steel's Limitations - Embraced by Aluminum's Strengths
While steel struts served a valuable purpose in their time, aluminum struts offer several distinct benefits:
- Corrosion Resistance: Aluminum inherently resists corrosion, eliminating the need for extensive maintenance procedures historically required with steel struts.
- Weight Reduction: Aluminum boasts a superior strength-to-weight ratio. This translates to lighter struts, potentially saving up to 9 lbs compared to steel. This significant weight reduction near the aircraft's center of gravity can enhance both aircraft performance and fuel efficiency.
- Unparalleled Strength: Rigorous testing has demonstrably proven aluminum struts to be exceptionally strong. They surpass the strength of even heavy-duty steel struts in both tension (lift force) and compression (weight on the wing).
Additional Advantages of Alaska Gear Company's Aluminum Struts
Our aluminum struts provide even more benefits:
- Simplified Design: The hollow design prevents moisture entrapment, ensuring compliance with Airworthiness Directive 99-01-05 without mandatory inspections.
- Broad Aircraft Compatibility: These struts are compatible with a wide variety of aircraft models, encompassing Piper Aircraft, PA-18, PA-20/22, PA-12/14, Maule, and Aviat Husky.
- Precision Manufacturing: Advanced CNC routers guarantee consistent quality and precision in every strut we manufacture.
The Future of Lift Struts is Aluminum
Our switch to aluminum struts exemplifies Alaska Gear Company's commitment to innovation. These lightweight, corrosion-resistant, high-strength struts offer our valued customers numerous advantages. With plans to introduce heavy-duty versions for specific models, Alaska Gear Company continuously strives to improve the flying experience.
Inquiries Regarding Steel Struts
While Alaska Gear Company has transitioned to aluminum, we acknowledge that some pilots may still have a preference for steel struts. We welcome inquiries and are open to discussing the potential sale of the STC and equipment necessary for another manufacturer to produce Sealed Steel Struts.
